What Is Lower Back Pain & Sciatica?

Sciatica is a pain from the lower back down to the hip, buttocks and leg. You may experience a shooting pain from you back down to your leg or a slight aching or tingling sensation.

It is caused by placing too much pressure on the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down to the lower leg. This increased pressure could happen for a number of reasons. For example, pregnant women may develop sciatica as a result of the extra pressure added to their bodies. This, along with other pregnancy pains may be remedied with osteopathy. For others, it often develops as the spine ages or through an injury occurred during sport or heavy lifting activities.

Sciatica often develops suddenly and may last several days or weeks. It will generally come and go however, if you think you have been experiencing sciatic pain, seek out advice from one of our friendly osteopaths on how to manage your discomfort more effectively.

Lower back pain can be very complex and can occur for many reasons, which may include sporting injuries, accidents, period pain, heavy lifting or degenerative issues such as arthritis. Through determining the underlying cause of your pain your osteopath is able to provide treatment and develop a strategy to manage or improve your pain — book your appointment with one of our friendly and experienced osteopaths for your pain management consultation.

How Can Osteopathy Help With Lower Back Pain & Sciatica?

We provide simple steps for you to take in order to speed up the healing process of your lower back pain and sciatica.

If you are experiencing acute pain it is important to ensure you let your body heal and avoid the activities which have caused or may worsen your condition. It is also important to keep active by doing light exercises as regularly moving your body is essential to preventing further damage from occurring.

When you visit our osteopathy clinic, you will be supported by trained and experienced osteopaths and together we can thoroughly assess and recommend the best course of treatment for your back pain.

As each individual’s cause of lower back pain and sciatica is different, the skilled practitioners at flex osteopathy will work with you to develop your individual management plan during your consultation.

Sessions will generally include hands-on treatment including massaging and stretching the affected area and teaching you ways to improve your posture to prevent further pain and injuries. Your osteopath will also suggest exercises for you to do at home and in between sessions to assist in a quicker recovery.
